Myths and Facts

Do we really have to do this interview?, asks Jagan Reddy as he sits down. Ideally he would not want to be photographed or interviewed, prefers an informal, off the record conversation instead. However, he slowly opens up and answers every question asked.

Sakhsi, his Telugu daily which just completed two months is reportedly doing very well, posing a threat to the well established vernacular dailies. "It feels great, Sakshi is currently the largest circulated daily with a 13 lakh circulation. What Eenadu achieved in 30 years we have accomplished in 60 days," he says proudly. He is awaiting the ABC and IRS figures to silence critics.

Circulation figures may not be easy to prove, but explaining to critics and the Opposition about where the funds for his new venture have come from, might not be easy.

"Deloitte has valued Sakshi at Rs 3,500 crores and my investors include companies like Aurobindo Pharmaceu-ticals, India Cements, Matrix Labs and Lanco Group, to name a few," says Jagan adding he has always challenged wild allegations made against his investments. He sees his newspaper as number one in the State soon, "Others will cease to matter. We want to be number one, so can’t afford to be biased," he says when asked how objective his newspaper can be with his dad heading the government.

Jagan explains O &M carried out a survey for him and the results stated that 60 per cent of the people felt the product was unbiased. Another report is being carried out on customer satisfaction by AC Nielson and based on its findings changes will be made.

Constantly justifying his funds and motives might be annoying, as everything he does or says comes under heavy scrutiny. "It’s difficult being the CM’s son. We don’t lead ordinary lives. I don’t even live in Hyderabad. Being the CM’s son I chose to live in Bangalore. I’m not even in politics, yet it’s the single point agenda for some people to attack me."

Does this mean he doesn’t see himself as a politician in the future? "When God and people desire it, I will think about it." Then what about the posters of him all round the city? "I spend time in my constituency, and try and help people, maybe they have an affinity towards me."

Why is Jagan a mystery? "I am not a mystery. I am very accessible to friends, people in my constituency and my employees. my movements have to be controlled. I’m more myself in Bangalore, but even there I have to move around with a lot of security because of the naxal threat. Being surrounded by so much security makes you conspicuous and it’s embarrassing. Weekends are with my family — wife and kids."

Security aside, being the CM’s son also deters him from unwinding at the city’s nightspots. "I am a teetotaler, yet, if I am seen at pubs people might project me in the wrong way. I have to be cautious about how I conduct myself." Jagan wasn’t this low-profile while studying in HPS. He got the whole school to go on strike and protest against a boarder being unfairly suspended. He laughs, when reminded about the incident. Apart from his newspaper, his business interests include infrastructure, power projects, a cement project and an upcoming news channel to be launched in October. A public issue for Sakshi is being planned too.

I found this article in Warangal District edition.

This is an awesome example of the effect of the wonderful old age pension scheme.

By mere coincidence, I realized couple of facts about pension scheme just in a span of one day. Firstly, although I was happy with the hike of pension money from mere 75/- to 200/-, I always had a doubt at the back of my mind, can they sustain with this little extra amount for the entire month?

This article seems to partly answer my doubt. It’s amazing to learn that older people like Vazramma are investing this money in petty businesses to earn more and sustain livelihood even at their 70s and 80s. This is truly inspiring.

Secondly, I felt the tremors of pension scheme last night. One of my cousins made a call to his grandfather’s brother to enquire about his well being. We were utterly shocked to know that he was receiving old age pension from the government. The reason we were shocked was that he is from a well to do family. When we further asked him why do u need pension money, he replied saying that every old person in his village is receiving pension money, irrespective of rich or poor.

It’s a mere coincidence that these two things happened just in a span of one day, which made me to realize the potential of Pension scheme.

No wonder why Dr YSR garu wanted to sanction pensions to 10 lakhs more old people in addition to current 70 lakhs beneficiaries. I am sure this is going to pay in a big way to YSR garu in the next elections.

He says tough to find sakshi newspaper. He tried to call sakshi office for monthly subscription and they are so back logged it seems.

By the way, my brother is a BJP supporter and chartered accountant. The reason I am saying this is because his view is not a biased view.

He says "Funday"(sunday special) is excellent. He says though that some people feel that Sakshi is promoting congress in a big way.But it will be stupid to try to be neutral.

IN the US, before foxnews came into picture the entire media was liberal and democratic party supporters. There is a big market share of disenfranchised republican party loyals who were rather listening to talk radio which is dominated by conservatives. Foxnews capitalized on this. People were trying to discourage foxnews by saying that they are not neutral and support republicans. But as everyone knows Foxnws has biggest market share in the US.

People who are biased towards TDP will never buy sakshi for sure. Congress party sympathizers will definitely buy. Then there are vast majority of politically unsavvy people who buy paper for stuff other than politics. I think sakshi winning them big because of infotainment values. Unless eenadu comes with 30 pages. Then there are small percentage people from other parties like BJP etc, who do not have their own paper so they would rather buy something that gives their penny's worth.

Regardless of whether sakshi will overtake in ABC ratings in 3-6 months, sakshi to us is like foxnews to republicans in he US. Brings a different view point.

In my opinion the real challenge for sakshi is if it can sustain when congress is not in power. I really hope it can. Because we all should look forward to sakshi as a marathon runner not a sprint runner. If it overtakes in ABC ratings and lasts only for couple of years, it does not serve any purpose.

YSR is brave and brainy. Some say, he is a combination of late NTR and Chandrababu Naidu, because he symbolises their populism and shrewd governance. But, others say, YSR is an embodimentof these two plus former Congress CMs like Jalagam Vengal Rao and Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, for his penchant for irrigation projects.

A few weeks before 2004 general elections, then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu commissioned a poll survey. Its import was that people had no belief in the Congress election promise of free power to agriculture sector. And also that they were not going to vote for Congress. Of course, the survey was proved wrong.

Nearly, 21 lakh farmers who depend on well irrigation got free power all these four years. The free power slogan was the brainchild of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, then opposition leader. While TDP dubbed the slogan as an empty promise, many in Congress and allies like TRS were not sure of a comfortable victory to Congress in 2004..But, the one person who firmly believed that his free power slogan would sail him through was Rajasekhara Reddy himself. He not only came to power, but also kept his promise of free power to farmers by signing the first file on the subject. Including Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, many economists in Delhi were wary of the policy.

His cabinet colleagues like K Rosaiah and principal secretary Jannat Hussain too had doubts over feasibility of a blanket sop like free power. But, YSR overruled all their objections and went ahead to implement it all categories of farmers. He wanted to prove his pro-farmer image. He succeeded.That is the essence of YSR. Whether it is a welfare scheme or a developmental programme, he always prefers grandiose solutions to even simple problems. He wants to go down in history by leaving his footprint on every sphere he traverses. The Rs 60,000 crore "Jala Yagnam" has precisely came out of this urge.But for him, many long pending irrigation projects including Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel could not have been grounded. Lakhs of farmers have kept hopes on gravity flow of water from around 45 projects. But, these projects have also given scope for charges of rampant corruption. TDP's latest charge sheet chiefly dwells on this.

After initiating a host of welfare schemes and grounding a large number of developmental activities which include lying of roads, buildings, recruiting jobs, and establishing universities and colleges in the last four years, YSR should have been in an unassailable condition.However, the situation is otherwise. YSR strongly patronizes his own likes and dislikes. Vehement opposition to separate statehood to Telangana is one such problems, the Chief Minister could not surmount. In fact, his unusual stridency against TRS and blow- hot- blow-cold relations with Telangana Congress leaders can be called his drawbacks.

He never shied away from risking enemies. He lost allies like TRS and CPI (M). He picked a quarrel with mighty media baron Ramoji Rao of Eenadu group. Antagonized several strong leaders from Telangana, like G Venkataswamy, MSR, V Purushottam Reddy, Madhu Yashki and V Hanumanth Rao.Gained a tagline that - "If YSR likes someone, he will go to any extent to reward him". This description to a political leader would have gone well 25 years ago, but not in 2008. But, still YSR enjoys being called so. He feels comfortable in the company of close aides like KVP Ramachandra Rao, N Raghuveera Reddy and Undavalli Arun Kumar.

There is no dearth of detractors to YSR within the party. They include N Janardhana Reddy, G Venkataswamy, S Jaipal Reddy, K Suryaprakash Reddy, D Srinivas and Madhu Yashki - the list goes on. But, as YSR enjoys the full confidence of Sonia Gandhi they cannot do anything now.

In fact, when YSR became CM, several senior leaders thought he would not last his term. But, surprisingly, YSR is now the longest serving Congress CM since 1978. Of course, he also marks the uninterrupted rule of CMs from Rayalaseema - for over 13 years, another record in AP.

Of course, many of his cabinet colleagues attribute YSR' success to good rains. To be fair to him, it is not that simple. Otherwise, how can one explain his passion for Rs 2 a kg rice scheme? How can one explain for free Indiramma houses for weaker sections? And how about a novel scheme like "Rajiv Arogya Sree"?Right from his "Padayatra" days four years ago, YSR has developed a knack of establishing director rapport with masses. As a doctor, he knows the pulse of people.

The outcome of May 29 byelections will decide whether YSR carries the same degree of authority in the remaining one year of his term. And don't forget: he is readying for a second term as CM after 2009.

'What we promise, we'll deliver'

Four years in power, CM Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has mastered the art of facing questions from media with aplomb. He looks pretty confident and very straight-forward in his answers. Excerpts from an interview to A Srinivasa Rao:

How do you rate your government's performance on a scale of 1-10?

I usually don't rate my own government's performance. But I try to elicit feedback from the people whenever I tour different parts of the State. Going by their rating, my government's performance is so far the best.

What do you think are your best achievements and miserable failures?

Massive irrigation projects, free power to farmers, record agricultural production, housing for poor and weaker sections, pensions etc., on a saturation concept are some of our best achievements.

And failures?
Nothing, except that we could not satisfy the Opposition parties.

Your government has taken up several projects and schemes worth thousands of crores. Simultaneously, there are allegations of rampant corruption in executing these programmes...

When you take up massive projects, these things are nothing but routine. We are doing everything with utmost sincerity. Allegations are there and we are answering each one of them. We have proved many of them wrong. As the saying goes, "stones are thrown only at the trees which bear fruits."

Except a few medium irrigation projects, many of mega irrigation projects are still under execution. What is the reason for the delay?

There are many reasons for the delay, like land acquisition and consequential litigations, technical problems and availability of raw materials. We are confident and assure people that all projects will be completed.

What made you revive Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme? Do you think it is economically viable?
A: We have started the scheme after a lot of discussions and thought. What we promise, we will do it. We have proved it through free power to all eligible farmers. Now we are implementing Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme.

Your SEZ policy has come in for a lot of criticism. There is unrest among farmers, who have lost their lands for SEZs. Do you think you are going in right direction?
These are all untrue. Our R&R package is one of the best in the country. Farmers and others whose lands are being acquired are very happy. SEZs are part of development and quite necessary. We are going in the right direction. No doubt about it.

But for curbing Maoists, there are allegations that your government has failed in maintaining law and order. Ayesha murder case is a classic example of failure of law and order…

Everyone knows that law and order is the best now. There are stray incidents like the Ayesha murder case. We are taking stringent action in every incident.

What are going to be your priorities in the next one year? Are you going to come up with more sops?
Our priorities are well laid out. We seek the welfare of the weaker sections. We are trying for development of rural areas and uplift of rural masses. We are trying to solve the unemployment problem. We will help farmers to the maximum extent possible. There is nothing called sops. We will announce welfare schemes whenever and wherever they are necessary. That is part of our governance. After all ours is a people's government.

Mekonking is partly right. TV9 is owned by ilabs.
The major stake holders in i labs are Srini Raju, Sandeep Reddy(Venture Capitalist) and Ravi Reddy Sannareddy(Megasoft Chairman). They have paired up with Dr Raj Reddy of CMU to promote SRI City( Satyavedu Resesrve Infracity)near Tada, spread across nearly 5000 acres.

There is a rumour in that area that Jagan is a sleeping partner in this venture. So one can understand the relationship with the promoters of TV9 and speculate the takeover. Taking things from these backdrop, we cannot ignore the possibility of taking over TV9, which would be much easier for Jagan, rather than sweating it out from the scratch to build another news channel with quality.

I am a regular visitor to your blog. I like your blog because it's the only blog I could find on the web that presents POV of YSR's fans/admirers. I read this posting (on Kantri) a few days ago, and watched the movie the next day. You have got your facts wrong, the story of Kantri & the roles played by Villains are not what you have mentioned (Ref. http://www.fullhyderabad.com/profile/movies/2235/2/).

So all the angst expressed by you and other bloggers (about usage of the name JAGAN) is mis-directed. That brings me to the main reason why I thought it is necessary to point out the shallowness and misplaced aggression in some of the comments posted here, such as

Tulasi garu said "seema prajalu ante anta lokuvaaaa, burra takkuva naaakoduku lu.." - Ignoring the fact that Athadu and Kanthri have nothing to do with Rayalaseema, is it a crime if someone makes a movie with Rayalaseema theme simply because it makes good commercial sense? Do you guys think producers waste away money to just take potshots at some region. Why do you immediately see a conspiracy theory behind that? Why do you stereotype and start calling names at the community of that producer?

What makes you say that the contribution of earlier generation of producers & directors was ignored?? When it comes to felicitations at the cinema functions, please note that the movie industry has become hero-centric in entire Indian film industry from 1960s, and hence only natural that the limelight is on those glamour boys. So, I am afraid your conspiracy theory does not work here too.

Lastly, Ravindra garu - I remember you mentioning that you hail from Krishna Dt. (I too have roots in Krishna and Guntur Districts). So when you posted a comment (in relation to a post on Aswani Dutt) ridiculing the language used in Krishna Dt., it did not make nice reading. Is it mandatory for a YSR fan to hate Kamma community and start loving Rayalaseema? (because it is the birthplace of YSR?). Even that does not explain why you have ridiculed the language of your own birthplace.

I am a keen reader of Andhra politics and I have my own opinions on every major politician and every major political parties. I admire the passion with which you & other bloggers here love YSR, the attention to detail with which you guys analyze various political developments. It would be even better if you guys keep out your prejudices and stereotypes, and also start looking at what YSR may possibly be doing(or has done)wrong. To start with, stop beleiving that YSR is GOD and can do no wrong. He might be better than many others, but he is definitely not without faults.

I might be sounding as if I am trying to take a moral high highground from where I am preaching down to you. But take a look at all the comments on your blog so far. Why do you think bloggers with similar passion and of similar education background, but of a different POV than yours are NOT posting comments on your blog. It is because of the reasons I mentioned above. Wouldn't you be happy if you can change the political leanings of at least one person by being able to engage in a healthy discussion with him on this blog. For that to happen you should welcome other POVs, while toning down your own prejudices.

I have been thinking about one particular strategy that can be followed by TDP as a last chance to protect party from being completely eroded from political picture.
WHAT IF TDP SAY YES TO TELANGANA?
It can happen in two situations.
If TDP could not gain good number of seats in by-elections of Telangana and also if KCR loose more number of seats.
IF Chiru observe this and say yes to Telangana, Ramoji and CBN will make Ragahvulu not to bother about saying yes to Telangana and will say yes to Telangana.

And so if everyone say yes to telangana and if unite against YSR, what can be the situation.
