తోడల్లుడి ప్రకాశం

Today is YV Subba Reddy's B'day. He is YSR's thodalludu.

My observations:

--> He is a billionaire now after executing many projects in Prakasam Dt.
--> He is an astute man and more in the KVP mould.
--> He is going to play a key role in 2009 as far as Prakasam Dt goes.
--> He will be the key man in allocation of tickets , money , strategies etc.
--> He might contest for MP seat in 2009 from same Dt.
--> I saw his interview in TV9 once , where he blasted Ramoji and informed that he is proud to be co-brother of YSR.
--> Before 2004, he did real estate business partnering with Vasantha Nageswara Rao's son and also Murali Mohan.
--> Doesn't he look smart ?

For more of his pix, check today's Eenadu and Sakshi E-Papers ( Prakasam Edition ).

Y'day YSR was in Prakasam Dt to unveil Subba Reddy's father's statue.

Politics in Andhra Pradesh - Current Dynamics: Regional, Ideological and Personality Contrasts

##
Samanth Garu wrote this article....
##

The last decade in Andhra Pradesh has been one of the most complex and riveting phases in the politics of this largest South Indian state (Lot of people north of the Vindhyas still think of Tamil Nad as geographically and demographically the largest southern habitation). The decade of the 80s saw the state stabilise as a bipolar competitive structure with the TDP at one pole and Congress at the other end. Almost all the other parties with the exception of MIM aligned themselves with the TDP which was not only a reflection of the prevalent anti-Congressism as a popular political principle, but also in a way mirrored the alignment of elites within AP. The 90s saw the first break in the bipolar arena with the BJP making a strong bid for the "Third Force" status. It won significant public support among the elites in Telangana and Coastal Andhra (actually won 4 Parliament seats on its own with a vote share of 15% in 1998). But the party literally frittered everything away by entering into a tie-up with the TDP on terms completely dictated by the TDP. The seat sharing arrived at prior to the 1999 Lok Sabha election was very divergent from the actual voting strengths of the two parties based on the 1998 elections. Consequently the BJP surrendered all political space even in its strongholds to the TDP and today stands as a fringe force fighting for an independent identity.

But an even more cataclysmal event was the formation of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi or the TRS whose avowed aim was the formation of a separate Telangana state. Injustices, perceived as well as real were highlighted and for the first time in 30 years, a strong pro-Telangana voice emerged in the state. Even opponents of a separate state concede that the advent of the TDP which drew its leadership at the Top level primarily from the landed Kamma elites of coastal Andhra led to a sort of disequilibrium in the Telangana region which saw its interests being marginalized. While at a ground level, government jobs in schools, hospitals and Government Offices which should have been reserved for local Telangana people based on the agreement between the various regions when Andhra Pradesh was formed, in reality significant numbers were cornered by people from Coastal Andhra. Significant number of appointments of Andhra people in school teacher and para medical posts were a direct result of political and caste patronage. What was even more disconcerting was the deeply felt denigration of Telangana culture and customs through the medium of cinema whose leading lights were in turn important allies of the TDP. Routinely the Telangana dialect was ridiculed and Telangana characters were either shown as villains or third rate jesters. One of the common themes in the cinema of the 90s was that the main protagonist would be the son of a middle class settler from Coastal Andhra in Hyderabad whereas the villain would be a bearded guy speaking a caricatured Telangana dialect. Settler Elites from Coastal Andhra who made it bigger in Hyderabad would never tire of boasting about their innate entrepreneurial, academic and political superiority to the locals. All of this fueled a sense of being dominated and ridiculed. It was therefore a case where cultural marginalization became the focal point for spotlighting grievances in the economic and political arena. Whereas in reality, the politics of Telangana has matured along much more progressive lines that in Coastal Andhra. The working class character of Hyderabad and the trade unions in Singareni Colleries have thrown up an alternative grassroot level political leadership in Telangana which is much more egalitarian in nature compared to the political leadership in Coastal Andhra which is almost entirely comprised of dominant business and land holding groups. While several trade union and working class leaders have emerged from Telangana, those with similar credentials from Coastal Andhra are few in number. In fact, T Anjaiah, a very humble, amiable trade union leader was one of the Chief Ministers during the Old Congress years. Given the soft target that he was, many newspapers pilloried him as an exemplification of the spirit of subordination to the high command that the Congress culture represented, but conveniently ignored was that in a way his rise was a barometer of the progressive edge politics in Telangana acquired. Even today working class leaders like PJR or Mukesh Goud have significant influence in Hyderabad.

While many non-Telanganites hate KCR, the TRS leader has very skillfully managed to articulate the grievances of his vote base, despite periods of stupor. He has tried to give a constructive flip to the movement by focusing on issues such as eradication of flourosis related diseases which scourges large areas of Telangana. The main opposition, the Telugu Desam on the other hand was focusing its actions on issues like stopping the construction of the Babli which were essentially issues of negotiation rather than action.

The last few years have also seen a significant revival in the political space occupied by the left wing. For years, the CPI and CPI-M functioned as appendages of the TD and slowly lost their cadre and popular support base. The fact that the leadership was entirely dominated by landed elites with little interest in actual reform made them even less attractive to potential constituents. An interesting phenomenon is that a lot of the communist leaders had interests in businesses, rice mills and other areas of typical capitalist economic activity and represented moneyed and landlord interests that were not accommodated in the Congress. In this sense, their alignment with the TDP made perfect sense in terms of congruence of economic interests. But in the last 5-6 years, the left parties have been successful in mobilizing sections of the poor and landless around issues of livelihood. In particular their agitations against the power tariff hikes won them a significant following. Though there is still lingering suspicion about the class character of sections of the leadership, the identification with poor has definitely increased making them a significant force.

Through the 90s there was also a significant change in the language and idiom of political discourse. Before ruminating further on this point it is important to understand that traditionally Andhra has been an agricultural state with pockets of industrialization around Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and a few other urban centres. There was a significant mass of Heavy Industry in the form of PSUs and an ancillary small and medium scale industry which flourished in the Industrial Development Areas, particularly in and around Hyderabad. An interesting point to note is that Hyderabad was no urban backwater before the advent of Chandrababu Naidu as has been suggested by some starry eyed commentators. Long before the TDP was formed, it was a large city with thriving industry, trade, education and culture (atleast by Indian standards). BHEL, IDPL and other PSUs were magnets around which a cosmopolitan culture emerged. Small and Medium scale manufacturing units provided employment to thousands and a vibrant working class flourished. While none of these had the glamour surrounding todays IT industry their economic and social value (a point I will elaborate later) was tremendous. Given this situation, the political discourse was primarily focused around augmenting agricultural and industrial production with a concurrent emphasis on Social Welfare in the form of food security and targeted schemes for the poor. The Congress represented this idiom very strongly and the earlier Congress regimes can be credited with creating what are still the powerhouses of todays economic activity in AP ie: the modern irrigation system and introduction of employment intensive heavy industry. But this idiom got completely overturned with Naidu's consolidation in power. Naidu wanted to present himself as a leader with a clean break from the past. He rose to power just at the time when Narasimha Rao's reforms created a clamour for the private sector and a negation of the government. A parallel development was an explosion in business friendly TV and print media which longed for a political order friendly to MNCs and big businesses. The elites especially the urbanized elites in the cities had contempt for the traditional khadi clad politician who did not speak, think or act like they did, notwithstanding the fact that in pretending to be poor and down to earth, the politician was addressing his biggest constituency – the poor. They longed for a politician who could speak the language of reform, markets, enterprise and all the other nice expressions. Naidu willingly and gladly embraced this image. Andhra according to him had to move away from Manufacturing and Agriculture to IT. IT was the new panacea (with a sprinkling of select other service sectors), notwithstanding the fact that even in the end state, it could not have provided employment to even a small minority. And IT giants promptly exploited the rulers' need to be seen as champions of IT industry. Huge subsidies were doled out in the form of free land, power and water. The slavish courting of IT czars inflated their own self worth and arrogance to such an extent that IT bigwigs really started believing that they were actually doing a favour to those areas where they were starting their units. At the same time, stupendous valuations of these companies in the stock market further boosted their standing in the business press and for some time these Executives actually tried to be the arbitrators on every area of policy making. Legislators and bureaucrats almost craved for endorsement of their "efficiency" from IT Czars. The huge detrimental side-effect was that the considerable amount of time and resources that was wasted by the entire administrative machinery to cater to the needs to this elite class. At a time when public health and education was adversely effected by dwindling government investments, monumental subsidies were doled out to the elite. Anything went as long as it was justified as reform and market friendly. In fact, a serious social audit should be commissioned to determine if what the State gave out to the companies was actually much more valuable than what the state gained in return, which most likely seems to be the case. But the one place where this new language won almost total endorsement was in the Corporate controlled business press. So much so that clones of Naidu started emerging in other states. Not to say that there were no positives in the situation. While the fact was that manufacturing, agriculture and artisan sectors completely languished and facing declining growth rates like never before and human development indices were dealt a severe blow by the policy choices that were exercised while concurrently creating a shameful situation of subsidies being cornered by the already rich, there were some positive side effects too. For instance, a genuine attempt was made to use IT in some areas of administration like bill payment for essential services, but this again was a case of too little scope and even lesser impact compared to the potential of what might have been achieved.

In striking contrast, the Congress was still seen as an antiquated institution that spoke in a language of the past. It was seen as an indisciplined bunch of competing political groups in contrast to the discipline of the Telugu Desam where what the leader said became a covenant and no one dared question. In another day and age the same could have been portrayed as the Congress' strength because of the level of internal dissent and diversity of opinion that was tolerated at a state level, whereas the TDPs attitude could be seen as internal dictatorship. But the reality was that at a popular level, it enhanced the credibility of the TDP. Khadi and Gandhi cap became symbols of hatred for the new elites which expected to see their political leaders sporting designer wears and more corporate oriented lifestyles. The Congress organization was weak with very little financial muscle. But this apparent weakness was in a way its strength. Lack of a strong centralized leadership meant that the congress had autonomous and powerful leaders at a taluk and district level who could agitate and mobilize people on local bread and butter issues, but without a centralized structure to bind them and rally them around, many felt it was a losing game. To make matters worse, puny leaders put on big airs by claiming proximity to the high commend with zero political or popular support base.

Right at this time, when things seemed to be going all wrong for the Congress, an unlikely hero emerged for the party in the form of YS Rajasekhara Reddy. A man who was hitherto known as the permanent dissident in Congress politics with a mercurial, stubborn temperament and having powerful enemies inside the party. Known for speaking his mind out and therefore in complete contrast to the durbari congress culture of intrigue and negotiation, he always was seen as a man on the wrong side of the fence. So much so that when the entire Congress machinery fell behind Sitaram Kesri to protect their individual interests despite Kesri's age and uninspiring leadership characteristics, YSR pitched in with a sure loser – Rajesh Pilot. To make matters worse Pilot was not the durbari Congressman with influence in 10 Janpath. He was a self made leader who was popular with his constituents and had a strong connect with local party workers and organization, but very limited ability to make deals and ensure positions of power ala Sharad Pawar. Basically YSR did not even have strong friends at an AICC level which is so critical in Congress politics. Many also blamed him for sapping the strength of the Congress party by indulging in intra-party feuds. But it was the exactly similar nature that he shared with Rajesh Pilot that proved his greatest strength. While he was not a shrewd manipulator, he was seen as a very popular man with the masses and had tremendous credibility with the party cadre. In fact lack of display of political manipulation added to his standing amongst party cadre who saw him as a reliable, straight forward and tough political leader who could stand up to his opponents. Through sustained political activism, he built a strong base for himself in the Rayalaseema area and his visible leadership ability got him a Cabinet Ministership in just his early thirties. Some say this fueled a premature ambition in him to become the Chief Minister of the state when there were several others ahead in the race and proved to be his undoing for a long time. Despite his fathers controversial background rooted in the peculiar faction culture in parts of Rayalaseema, he was able to steer clear of factional politics and built up a strong reputation as someone who genuinely had the interests of backward Rayalaseema at heart. He also had the reputation of being a good organizer who could hold the cadre and the party structure together. At a point when Babu was the darling of the entertainment press, was when YSR also started slowly coming into his own. As the Leader of the Opposition he played a very aggressive role in highlighting the severe agrarian distress that was tearing the fabric of rural Andhra. He continuously championed causes which seemed pro-poor and became the most articulate opponents of the brazenly rich pro-corporate policy regime that was pushed through in the guise of reform. He completely recast the thrust of the Congress ideological charge from apologetic endorsement of what was called reform to the Old Congress policy which gave primacy to agriculture and artisans – two sectors in large crisis. While all this was happening at the level of assembly debates, the party organization itself as a coherent structure had become moribund. This is when he hit the masterstroke of his political career. The 1500 KM long padayatra or the walking marathon in the scorching summer heat of Rural Andhra. He criss-crossed for almost a month or so on foot the length and breadth of Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema when the sun was beating down like a ball of fire. The march became a symbol of genuine protest where entire villages enroute would come to represent their grievances to the Leader of the Opposition. YSR managed to establish a strong personal connect with the people and had a face to face understanding of what the poor and disenfranchised were going through. His speeches at wayside stops attracted multitudes and very importantly welded party cadres on a common platform. In fact the second line of Congress leadership today like Botsa, Dharmana, Konathala, Sambhani, Lagadapati were all people who played a key role in the Yatra. From the point of view of imagery, the contrast could not have been more vivid. At a time when Politicians started acquiring celebrity status sporting Armanis and going around in Benz cars when the majority of the poor around them was seething with discontent, here was a politician undertaking a marathon on foot and meeting people. As the Congress party went into the elections in 2004, YSR emerged the undisputed leader and the rest is history.

What about the present ? It is 3 years since the Congress came to power on a platform completely different from that of its predecessor. Agricultural distress has shown definite signs of easing up and Andhra is today much better than say a Vidarbha in terms of dealing with the agrarian crisis. But the long term solution to the sectors crisis depends to a large extent on whether the Congress has the political will and muscle to push through the much needed investments and implementation strategies in augmenting irrigation for agriculture and manufacturing sectors in the state. Given the long gestation periods of some of these initiatives, only time may be the judge on how successful YSR is in keeping the promises he made to people. A lot of pro-poor initiatives aimed at providing social security to those below the poverty line have been initiated like the pension scheme and the housing scheme. The state has unveiled a unique health insurance policy which provides free treatment for all life threatening illnesses to the poor. Given that health was one commodity that became completely out of reach of the poor and underprivileged during the last regime, this is an invaluable policy initiative. And unlike a lot of paper schemes, this scheme seems to have been operational and has saved a lot of poor lives. But again, the scope and coverage needs to be continually expanded. The downside is a lot of the Welfare schemes are vulnerable to corruption which seems to have seeped in. Some of the corruption stories might actually have been inflated and overblown by a hostile media which has very explicity identified itself with the Telugu Desam party in the past and present as well, but there is truth that corruption is watering down some of the intended good effects of important initiatives. YSR has also managed to take on some of the vested interests that were the biggest beneficiaries of a friendly regime earlier. He headon clashed with IMG-Bharatha, a fake company that managed to pocket 1000 acres of prime urban land in Hyderabad for nothing and made them bite the dust. A powerful multinational like Monsanto was taken to court for selling overpriced seed to farmers under the MRTP act and the company has now drastically reduced its sale price as a result of the court ruling which was adverse. None of these could have ever been possible under the Naidu regime which bent over backwards to appear pro-private business. He took on super powerful society figures like Ramoji Rao and even though for his own political purposes, managed to tear the cloak of respectability from their faces. But even YSR finally succumbed to some of the pressures exerted by the biggest beneficiary of Government doles – the IT Sector. Subtle pressure was applied through well placed media columns that initially portrayed the CM as anti-IT industry and as ignorant of the needs of the new middle class. Somewhere the CM seems to have succumbed.

Given the cycles of anti-incumbency that have become a feature of Indian politics, YSR may not win again in the next election. Despite all that might be counted against him, his contribution to Indian society and political discourse will be remembered as his ability to firmly put the interests of the poor and underprivileged back on the political agenda of a society which was at one time disturbingly obsessed with Neon Lights and Celebrity clothing as symbols of progress. His various personal and political weaknesses notwithstanding, here was a man who treated a humble peasant tilling his fields with respect and dignity. Nothing can stand in better contrast than the image of the deference with which some his adversaries kowtowed before film stars and foreign dignitaries.

Rhetoric Vs Reality - A Very Instructive Read

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2008/02/09/stories/2008020951192100.htm

While the piece above is a mundane piece of reportage, it actually is of very significant importance in the conduct of politics and media commentary in India in general and Andhra Pradesh in particular. For the first time Andhra Pradesh's GDP growth rates have gone beyond 10% this year and have beaten the national averages by handsome margin. Contrast this to the situation between 1995-2004 (yes, the period when spin master Babu was in power), Andhra's growth rates were at about 5.4-5.5 versus an All India Average higher than 6.0% and more dismally this was less than the growth rates achieved before the Superman came to power. So when all the experts in the media and business were busy clapping for Naidu, nobody even bothered to ask the MOST important question that should have mattered, if indeed there was an economic revolution going on in AP, why on earth were the GDP numbers so abysmal. Mind you, this was over a period of almost a decade. So there was no way this could have been written off as an exceptional phenomenon. And 9 years is a pretty long time for any constructive policy interventions to have shown their beneficial effects. In 9-10 years, after all, Russia reversed its fortunes from a run down poor nation to being a strong political and economic player.

While this completely debunks Naidu as the purveyor of economic wisdom, also stand indicted are all those media groups and industry associations which so loudly applauded him for lousy performance. And also exposes brutally the parameters upper classes use to define development. Neon lights, shopping malls, investor conferences, fraud Formula 1 bids, McKinsey papers and pictures of investors with vested interests shaking hands with government heads can never ever be indicators of development.

Apologists hide behind a very specious theory - drought. Conveneiently forgotten were that drought and flood are a permanent feature of the Indian landscape, something neither very special nor specific to Andhra Pradesh.

Why am I making a noise now - its because the issue is still relevant. We brand politicians as pro or anti-development just basis the language they talk, the clothes they wear and the image they present to TV cameras. Despite the lessons of the 2004 electoral verdict, the mainstream media still has not made a conscious effort to get its act right. The sooner we do, the better.

Samanth

Pls read Feb 2008 edition.

I kind of liked it as the opinions seem to be from neutral parties.

Copy Paste

CBN who believed in Hi-Tech Raj ( which is bilkul Fine ) is simply copy pasting YSR in all aspects.

a) YSR outsources all party related activities to PCC Prez and concentrates on connecting with masses.

CBN who is a big time 'centralized' person, has now given Telangana responsibilities to D Gowd and coastal resps to NHK.

b) YSR concentrates more on Sankshemam leaving administration to IAS / IPS.

CBN is more or less doing the same now , promising people whatever comes to mind.

c) Inka Free Power, Pensions etc schemes copying is known to one and all.

క్షేత్రమే కీలకం

2004 elections time.

Narasaraopet:

Kodela was the king undisputed.

In comes Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy from Nellore, contesting for MP seat from NPet.

Palnadu Centre lo says this to Kodela.

'Sye Ante Sye. I am not soft like Kasu Krishna. This is Mekapati here. ఎక్కడికైనా వస్తా. ఏమైనా చేస్తా' .

He followed his words with Action. Kasu Mahesh Reddy and Mekapati together were behind Kodela literally, following him to see if tries to dominate any area in the constituency.

To summarise, Opposition may be percievably strong. But , క్షేత్ర స్థాయి లో aggressive గా ఉంటే గెలుపు కష్టం కాదు.

Ippudu Kodela is searching for a place to win in Guntur Dt. He is a hero in his own right but I am just telling the facts.

Manakanna Podiche...

Monagaade Ledammo !!!

Relax ... Read ...Realize

Dear Tulasi Garu,

I love Dr. YSR from my childhood.

But Our family is traditionally supporters of TDP from 1983. So, in general, I had an inclination to TDP and I used to read only EENADU. For last few months, I started to do something for TDP in coming Elections (Due to eenadu reading, I was simply blind and I used to think all Congress was Waste). In that process, I started reading on 9yrs TDP rule. I found the following article and then I started digging more and more and finally I realised what CBN and his Government was. Media made Him Big..Please read the following article..

Chandrababu: Image and reality

On most indicators, Chandrababu Naidu ran the worst performing state in the south of India for nearly 10 years. Yet the more damage he did, the more his media standing grew, says P Sainath.
July 2004: WELL, IT might be easier now to persuade the media that Andhra Pradesh is slightly bigger than Hyderabad. Two months after the polls, the media barely mention Chandrababu Naidu. The most written about Indian politician has vanished from their vision. Post-poll analyses have debated whether the national mandate was against Hindutva or for the reforms. They've been mostly silent on Mr. Naidu. This is more out of embarrassment than introspection. After all, he was the poster boy of the neo-liberal economic reforms.

Still, a look at the myth of Mr. Naidu is key to grasping a lot of things. Including the gigantic crisis crippling Andhra Pradesh today. On most indicators, he ran the worst performing state in the south of India for nearly 10 years. Yet the more damage he did, the more his media standing grew. The gap between his image and his record is stunning.

No other figure in Indian politics got the kind of press that Mr. Naidu did. The `miracle man.' The `GeneratioNext CM,' and, of course, `The CEO of Andhra Pradesh.' A larger than life image held up by huge spending on self-publicity helped this along. Ad-gurus from Mumbai flew in to foster it. Our media lapped it up. And starry-eyed journalists from The New York Times, The Financial Times and heaps of other places, weighed in with their bit.

Take 2002 for instance. Top international journals were scripting the Naidu-namah. Hyderabad was full of their hacks. One of them all but asked the Third World to pray for leaders like Mr. Naidu. That his regime had just chalked up growth of - 17. 06 per cent in agriculture seemed hardly to matter. The image was the thing. When the media dealt with Mr. Naidu, facts were irrelevant. As the founder of Private Eye once said: "Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story." That was the editor of a satirical journal speaking half in jest. Our own editors applied that dictum with real zest and no trace of humour.

Had another Chief Minister taken on an Alyque Padamsee to give him an image makeover, we would never have heard the end of it. The media saw nothing wrong in Mr. Naidu doing this. Wasn't he, after all, the ultimate brand?

It's telling that what passed for critical press scrutiny first appeared after the exit polls suggested he was headed for defeat. Even then, there were those asserting the coast would stand by him in the second round of voting. How could it be otherwise? Hadn't he done such great work?

Mr. Naidu began with much goodwill. (Earned by the public's acceptance of him as N.T. Rama Rao's true successor.) His energy, his attitude towards technology (if not his grasp of it) seemed refreshing at the time. All of this went down well. As did his impatience with bureaucracy. But in the next few years, it became clear that the policies driven by that enthusiasm were disastrous for millions of poor people in his state. However, the more he disconnected from the poor, the more the corporate world loved him. He was now the champion of `the reforms.' The darling of international donors.

Endorsements from the World Bank, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton and assorted other billionaires further puffed his image - that of a selfless CEO slaving through sleepless nights to lead his dumb masses to enlightenment. All the evidence to the contrary seemed not to shake this. A few thousand farmers taking their own lives did fray the image for some. But mostly, as is now painfully clear, the media failed the challenge of that issue. Again, a couple of such stories did make the front pages outside the state - after the exit polls.

Even the stories that did appear were shallow. Most reduced the suicides to solely an outcome of drought. A lazy way of dodging the many factors behind them. On the whole, a sloppy sycophancy affected media across the board.

Keith Bradsher, for instance, is an award-winning investigative journalist. You'd think he would show some scepticism. But no. There was no place for that in the Naidu-namah. You came to this shrine to worship. Take this howler from Mr. Bradsher on Mr. Naidu in The New York Times (Dec. 27, 2002): "The party's hold on power seems secure in Andhra Pradesh, partly because Mr. Naidu and his allies speak Telugu, a language spoken only in this state and by a few people in two adjacent states."

Really? What language do Mr. Naidu's rivals speak? Esperanto? (Never mind that the party's hold on power being secure seems, 18 months later, like famous last words.) The year that report ran was one that saw a rush of farmers' suicides in the state. Mr. Bradsher's piece approves of Mr. Naidu's having "come close to balancing the state budget." It does not say a word about his gigantic borrowings. From the World Bank and other sources, and the effect that it is likely to have on many budgets to come. Mr. Bradsher also wrote that Andhra Pradesh was on its way to being "an international model for certain public policies."

A hard-headed publication like The Financial Times fell in line. (May 2, 2003.) It had no qualms about suggesting: "In a country where lower caste women are locked out of decision-making, the government of Andhra Pradesh is sponsoring a social revolution." This was happening in "thousands of villages" in the state. This, of Andhra Pradesh, where the panchayats were shut out and destroyed by Mr. Naidu's schemes. The FT correspondent even found a village where women "who had for generations stayed indoors without voice or influence, now dominate the village square."

The Wall Street Journal saw him as "a model for fellow state leaders." Time magazine declared him `South Asian of The Year' as early as 1999. Newsweek responded by crediting Mr. Naidu with a Ph.D. he does not have.

In the Indian media, the breathless awe and wonder was over the top. Yelling "IT' and "software" often enough became a substitute for actual performance in those vital fields. Andhra Pradesh did not lead the nation. But media audiences thought it did. The state was not even in the top three. And was slipping in the ranks.

This is also a state whose literacy levels are the worst in the south and lag behind the national average. A glance at the (Tata) Statistical Outline of India would show this: Even Cyberabad's literacy is behind that of Patna, Ranchi, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Jaipur. And that's the rating of Mr. Naidu's showpiece.

It's a state where millions of children are outside school. A state that has the largest number of child labourers in the country. And one where close to 90 per cent of rural workers are either illiterate or educated only up to the primary level.

Employment growth saw a drastic decline in the Naidu era. In rural Andhra Pradesh, it was 2.40 per cent per annum in the decade before him. It fell to 0.29 per cent during 1994-2000. This was a worse decline than that seen in the rest of India. The rate of growth of real wages in rural areas fell sharply in the 1990s.

What the media fondly called "one of the fastest-growing states" was really stumbling. The growth of GDP was just around 5 per cent for 1994-2001. Lowest among the southern states. Lower than the national average. Lower than what the same state had posted during 1981-91. Economists C. Mahendra Dev and C. Ravi show that "in the 1980s, A.P. was one of the top performing states in terms of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth. Only three states, Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra, showed higher growth than A.P. in the 1980s." However, this rank sank from number four to eight in the next decade. "Seven states showed higher growth than A.P. in the 1990s." The state was overtaken by Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and West Bengal.

This was the one state in the south that showed no improvement in its Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) between the first and second National Family Health Surveys. (Those came out in the early and late 1990s.) Indeed, its IMR of 65 is slightly worse than Bihar (62) on this count.

Small farmers did badly everywhere in the country in the 1990s. But it was in Andhra Pradesh that they committed suicide in thousands. The years of hostile policy still take a toll. (The suicides continue in the weeks after Mr. Naidu's exit. And there is a Kafkaesque touch to his standing up in the state Assembly demanding a decent deal for the farmers.)

Through it all, Naidu-worship in the media only grew. With not an iota of scepticism. The media bios of Naidu called him the son of a "poor agriculturist." Or of a "small farmer." Or of a "modest farmer." How the modest farmer and his spouse came to be worth Rs. 21 crores after nine years in power is a mystery no one wants to solve. That's the figure you'll find in his poll-time declaration of assets. But no questions. The king could do no wrong.

Though this is a known thing, I am just reiterating.

The only reason why Communists are going with TDP , is caste.
Communist's agenda is welfare , not corruption. and YSR is also working in welfare schemes only.

Ideally, at center, the best ally for Communists is Congress.
Why cannot it be so, in state ?

Reason is , caste.

#####

Mega Party advisors are saying that long term benefits are more important than short term.

Well if you give short term schemes, then those schemes will not stand before YSR's schemes because , YSR is already implementing them.

If you dont give them short term schemes, then voters wont show much interest.

So that is a challenge for your party as such and you might have to strike a balance.

Dear Ravindra garu,

Communism is a good philosophy.

30 years varaku Communist
30+ tarvaatha Capitalist

Is better , says MSR
Which makes sense also.
####

I was discussing 2009 possibilities with friends over the weekend.
This is the logic.

In 2004 wave, TDP got 45 seats.
In the absence of anti-incumbency, in the worst case, Congress should get 80-90 seats without any effort.

Now , once YSR and Jagan get into 'Kshethra Sthaayi' and micro manage the entire process, we can add another 20-30.

Overall, 120 seats minimum to Congress is my take.

'Home'ly Experiences

Met Shri Jana Reddy Garu today during his visit to Bay Area.

--> He agreed for a snap.
--> After the snap , I told him we are ys yuvasena members. He smiled, put his arms closely/strongly around us and agreed for another snap.
--> We introduced ourselves with our names. While leaving, he called us by our names and said 'Bye'.

After this,

Many of my prejudices / assumptions against him are gone.

##

Met Shri Lakkireddy Hanimi Reddy Garu in the same function.

What a man ? His Telugu is so pure.
The man is a US billionaire and yet he is so simple , bright and inspirational.

When CBN came to bay area some 6 months ago, Hanimi Reddy Garu donated 100K USD to NTR trust it seems.

Last month, YSR felicitated this man in Hyderabad. In the function, YSR said 'I dont attend felicitation functions. I dont agree for my felicitations also. But I came because of Hanimi Reddy garu's charitable acts.'

In Mylavaram in Krishna Dt, seems he has donated millions for education and other things.

Casteism in my life.

http://www.andhrajyothy.com/mainshow.asp?qry=/2008/apr/20new47

My 2 Cents on casteism. Please do no think of below as Sodhi.

##

My teachers were brahmins and Christians.

When I had a life threatening accident, I was operated succesfully by a Brahmin.

When I needed a job badly in my life, NRN's infosys gave me a job. He is a brahmin too.

My early inspirations in life are ANR,Ram Gopal Varma, Sirivennela S Sastry.

In Gowtham College, Vijayawada, my pricipal KKR was a Kamma. He has been my role model since then. My thought process was really affected by this great man. He now looks after Gowtham Concept School in Gudivada.

As such , caste has no relevance in my life.

People may ask , why then are you a YSR fan ?

Answer is ,Childhood Impressions die hard. My grandma showed me YSR pic when I was 8 0r 9, and she told 'Keep an eye on this guy. He will be CM one day'.

That is all. I stuck to YSR since then.

Ravi Shankar of Art of Living says , "Casteism has links to Identity Crisis". I somehow tend to agree.

To summarise, one's values should be driven by humanity and not caste.

It is easier said than done , but that's the truth. In your last few days of life, that is what will really matter.

Kandula Nagarujuna Reddy

--> Good Follower of YSR from Prakasam Dt.
--> But because of lack of trust in Congress coming to power, jumped to TDP twice.
--> After first jump, YS got very angry.
--> Somehow, they patched up and Kandula came back.
--> Before 2004 election, he again jumped to TDP.
--> YSR said dont show your face again to me.
--> Kandula lost in 2004
--> After YSR came to power, he told his men 'Ask Nagarjuna Reddy to meet me. Past is past and I will take care of him'.
--> Nagarjuna Reddy ki Moham Chellaledhu. He did not meet YS.
--> Later he got cancer/renal failure. YSR met him thrice in KIMS and ensured all kind of support.
--> He died in 2006.

Some of the above may not be exactly correct. But this is told to me by a relative of Gangula Pratapa Reddy.

25 years nundi YSR T lo settled , Ayina they talk about his injustice to the region.

He is a better T Bidda than KCR because

--> He treats many T leaders from across castes, as his family members.
--> Most of the major irrigation projects are happenning in T region.
--> Funds are getting released for any development work that T MLA's etc propose. TRS leaders also got many works done during YSR regime.

Also,

--> Padha yathra started from Chevella.
--> Prana Hitha ani oka river vundhi ani cheppindhi YSR. Now every Tom, Devender and Harish talk about Pranahitha Chevella Project.

KCR might have stroked the self respect theme, but it is YSR who provided the most material benefits and affection, to the T region , ever.

Someone told me, when you look at YS, you feel that he is one amongst you ,unlike CBN or KCR.
I thought it is indeed so.

I even think that he is a better Telanganite than KCR himself, purely because of the kind of relations he maintains with leaders from Telangana.

CBN / KCR kind of treat them as Karivepakulu , I think.

You give them what they want, and they will give you what you want.

I think the next scheme should be , 100 Rs subsity in power / water bill for household usage, citing rise in inflation i.e. they can use this 100 for 1/2 month Grasam.

Pakkalo Ballem

D Srinivas is slowly showing his true colours.

a) He did not react positively to Lakshi Parvathi's desire to join Congress party.
b) He is slowly negotiating with TV Raghavulu of CPM . If , and only if , there is an alliance tomorrow, he can claim credit for that.
c) D Nagender and D Srinivas do not get along that well. Now , for the first time, there are allegations against D Nagender in Greater Hyderabad. It could be the handiwork of his opponents backed by D Srinivas.

Okkade !

YSR is one side.

Chiru / TDP / Left / TRS / Eenadu / AJ on another side.

We think that it shows the power of YS.

Critics can say that in 2004, everyone did the same against CBN and so, what is special this time ?

We say

a) YSR is just 4 yrs old in power, whereas CBN was 9 years old. In 4 years itself, YSR has become a formidable force.
b) Print Media has created such a bad propaganada on YSR in the past 4 years.
c) Congress Mark indiscipline / corruption which can contribute to negativity.
d) Increased Media Influence where each and every small incident is put under microscope, like boru baavi lo china baabu etc.
e) Chiru's Entry which hits Congress numbers bigtime.
f) Telangana Sentiment which has increased manyfold.

Inspite of the above, YSR is still a strong force to reckon with.

#####

Biyyam scheme was celebrated like a festival.

When was a festival celebrated last time, in entire state in response to what a leader has done ?

As far as I can remember, it was during

--> Padhayathra where people waited for YSR to come to their village.
--> 1994 State wide Trips made by NTR, where he roared / entertained people ,against then Congress leaders.

#####

YSR is wearing glasses again. I sincerely pray that his eyes are going to be alright.

All the best

Thanks to YS Anna for the subsidised groceries scheme.

Poonam Malakondaiah is the IAS officer in charge and ,IPS officers are also being roped in, to make the implementation near to flawless.

State Lo Farmers nunchi buy chesi state lone have-nots ki andhinchatam.

One bird --- Two shots
We create an internal market for farmers and also sell the goods internally. The difference in cost is subsidised.

The money saved by the poor can be either saved or they can increase their purchasing power thus resulting in more money into the market leading to more economic activity.

Everyone says, the fruits of development should reach the poor. This is a classic real life implementation of the same idea.

All the best Anna.

Just decimate the opposition with these kind of schemes.

Ee article last paragraph makes my blood boil.

I wanted to avoid making -ve remarks any more on anti-YSR camp , but I am becoming helpless looking at these articles.

Asalu war start chesindhi Ramoji. They are now saying YS is being cruel.
Sheer Nonsense + Timidity

Chiru + Left -- TDP + TRS

YSR might win or may lose against this combo.

But the last 4 years + coming 1 year will be forever etched in my mind just for the sheer qualities that YS displayed.

--> Saahasam
--> Take it Easy Thinking
--> Making Governance Poor Man Centric
--> Vision
--> Making Legends shrink before him into small pawns.
--> Setting a trend of Leaders being trustworthy.

One of my good friend's family, got a house under Indiramma.
He says 'We will vote for Congress for sure. But if Chiru comes, we will vote for Chiru'.

Golf Game lo Swing is very important.

Elections lo Kooda last 1-2 months, swing management is vital. In some places, swing turns in the last night before the election.

With focussed effort till the last minute, I am sure Congress can get there.

Jalsa

Just now back from watching Jalsa, which is a 3.25/5 movie for me.

Two things that stuck me while watching the movie:

a) One journalist refers to the villian as a dangerous factionist. Villian replies 'If that is true, would you dare to ask me this question ?'

Goonda, Factionist, Raakshasa Paalana etc etc ani YSR ni 4 years nunchi CBN, Daridrapu Devender Gowd, Ramoji, AJ ,KCR,Harikrishna etc etc antunnaru. Same theory as in Jalsa applies to them also.

b) Pawan Kalyan's child brother dies because his father could not afford 1 lakh for heart treatment.

Well, in real life, Arogyasri was devised by YSR which will help in such exact cases.

Next Scheme Announced

###########################

Sakshi needs to revolutionise the development drive in in the state.

Morning Sakshi paper choosi Officials Parugulu Pettali Prajala Issues Resolve Cheyyataniki.

###########################

One thing is, govt is giving importance to manufacturing industry than the service industry.E.g: Leather Park, Pharma City , Uranium Plants, Cement and Steel Factories etc etc

Manufacturing Industries absorb a lot of natural resouces and will create a lot of pollution / waste materials. Also, there will be very few jobs in there.

Knowledge Industry is opposite in every way. YSR should think of attracting / retaining / establising knowledge based companies ( IT , BPO etc )

###########################

The concept that is driving YSR's policies is ,to give back to the society that has been gotten from society.

Means if govt gets 1000 crores through taxes etc, the entire 1000 crores should be spent on providing direct material benefits back to the society.

Of course, how effectively is it implemented is another question. But the concept is to be understood.

It is better not to have a pre poll tie-up with Chiru. Based on poll results, decision can be taken.

##############################

Comments on Dy Speaker by CBN should not be taken lightly. Till CBN tenders another apology , issue should not be sidelined.

##############################

My 2 cents to Sakshi:
First 2 pages can be devoted to thrash Opposition , Eenadu and AJ.

Other pages need to highlight the macro issues like

-->Unemployment
-->Natural Calamity Assistance
-->Specifics on help to be given for farming
-->Other schemes that should be launched that will have an affect on masses

Local / District Editions should concentrate on

-->Infrastructural Issues like roads / sanitation / water / transport , at village level.
-->Corruption in local bodies and offices.
-->Availability of Essential goods
-->Functioning of Govt Hospitals

Idhoka Andhamaina Morning

Idhoka Andhamaina Morning....
Antaadu Jagananna in the new Saakshi Ad that I saw in Maa TV a minute back. The ad is very impressive.

##########################

Jogaiah Garu Mallee Koosaru.
He says he will join Chiru's party. Why he is still in the party , no one knows. He can leave if he is so unhappy.

##########################

Botsa Reply to Dayakar's Kutumba Palana / caste allegation is deadly.
He said 'We came with people's mandate and not by backstabbing' and
'BC La Pai Antha Prema Unte Baammardhi ki RS seat elaa itchaav ?'

##########################

Kuthuhulamma, Dy Speaker , who has great respect for CBN because of their earlier association in Congress, also today ridiculed CBN's behaviour in the assembly.
If I have to describe CBN's acts, then , it is 'attention-seeking , show-off, 'lying' '.

##########################

Chiru Party pedithe first Vangaveeti Radha Jump anedhi latest talk. All the best young man. Friendship Kodali Naani tho. Enemyti with Devineni. Ticket itchindhi Jagan. Nuvvu Velledhi Chiru Gootiki. Ardham Kaavatledhu Nuvvu.

##########################

Ramanaidu Ki RV award.
Krishna ki Padmasree Nomination.
Devineni Nehru Ki Jubilee Hills Land Settlement.
Vasantha N Rao ki APCAAB presidentship.
Late Koduri Krishna Mohan ki AP Film Dev Chairmanship.
Sakshi lo Lanco investments.
Nama N Rao ki Project Contracts.
Nagarjuna / Gopichand in Sakshi Inaug.

Question is, evadraa YSR Anti-Chow annadhi ?

##########################

My better half said something against Sakshi paper just to provoke me. After the look I gave to her, she said 'I dont think you will get so angry if someone says something against me!!!!!'

##########################

Just now saw the Agri workers insurance ad, the scheme launched by YSR.

This will affect 38 lakh families.
Families will get 30K if there is a death and, 100 per month as allowance for each child's education.
All this for a very paltry premium.
Thing is , was there any politician ever, who devised so many schemes for the poor ?
